Independence Day poem: Letter from mother Malawi

Dear my Malawian children
That 48th independence day of trying to be independent is here
Even though I your mother is still searching for independence
I want to live in a place
Where the mind is free without fear
Where the head is held high without shame of being Malawian
Where knowledge is free not manipulated by quota
Where the world is one not fragmented by ethnic hatreds
Where the world will be a better place to live than to worry
Where words remembering our martyrs come out with tears
Where no more killing of each other like 20th July will ever happen
Where we all strive tirelessly towards the depth of truth not deceit
Where we all strive towards a very happy united Malawi
Where more mouths needs are feeding themselves, not begging
Where more hands are working not idling
Where everyone has a national agenda not Ndata-mansion agenda
When each year after year we will pride in our forefathers successes Where each year after year we will count our successes
Where our successes will not be roads and maize production only
Where our success is freeing ourselves from economic bondage

That day to be independent will be …..
The day we no longer depend on aid
The day we no longer fight and shed blood
The day we tell each other stories of success not failure
The day we export many products to the west not importing
The day every child will see education as a right not a privilege
The day every mother and father shall have respect from the youths
The day Anti-Corruption Bureau will not be a fighting tool for politics
The day we admit our mistakes, accept failure and learn a lesson
The day we stop working for personal agendas but being patriotic
The day when poverty and starvation will stop stealing the joy
It’s the day I mother Malawi shall be an independent mother
Independent mother of 13 million children living happily
Independent from being 48 years seeking independence
