Instant justice mob kill suspected thief

Angry people of Ndiwo Village, Traditional Authority (TA) Kalonga in Salima on Saturday took the law into their own hands and stoned a suspected thief to death, in a move which some locals have said is a sign of the community’s frustration caused by increased cases of house break-ins in the district.

According to Salima Police Public Relations Officer Sergeant Gift Chitowe, the deceased suspect was identified as White Ajida.

Chitowe said Ajida broke into the house of Eneless Black of Ndiwo village in the early hours of Saturday with his two accomplices and stole assorted home items.

“The owner sounded an alarm to his neighbours before the thieves sneaked out of the house, and the neighbours apprehended the suspect.

“The mob pounced on the late Ajida and severely beat him with various weapons, before leaving him to die,” said Chitowe.

The police publicist said when the police took Ajida to Salima District Hospital, he was pronounced dead  by doctors on arrival.

Ajida was 39 years old and was from M’noloma village TA Pemba in the district.

In a related development Salima Police said they found a dead body of a person who had been missing for some days, at Chigolo fishing village in the area of TA Msosa in the same district.

Chitowe said the body was identified as that of George Mwinyoro 49, of Kafumu Village in the same area, who had been missing from 26th July 2012.

Salima District Hospital officials said the deceased died because of excessive drinking without taking food.
