An angry mob has set ablaze a Chilomoni Police Station in Blantyre and attacked police officials.

Violence erupted in the Chilomoni township following death of a resident, who was allegedly tortured by police.

The people said they torched the Police Station to avenge the death of their colleague.

They claim the person whose identinty was not immediately verified was killed by two police officers following an argument at a drinking joint.

Police have since teargassed the group in order to disperse it.

It is feared that suspects on remand at Chilomoni Police Station have run away following the fire.

  2. Everyone blames the police when they malfunction and yet they run to them when they are in trouble. My condolences to the family that lost their loved one.Burning the police station is one of the biggest mistakes my fellow Chilomoni citizens have made.

I think anthu ambiri sitiganiza we always attribute any incident to politics, that’s why sitizapita patsogolo. the issue here is policemen off duty drinking beer, fights with a civilian, and all this not yet confirmed and that one dies, ok is it the police wrong or police officers involved wrong? does the police station belong to the two individual police or all Malawians around that place chilomoni? Now who is going to suffer now that the the station is closed? All officers will be working at BT station and the same residents will be looking for the services of police but cant access it at chilomoni. Zinthu zinazi we need to comment with sober minds other wise nyasa hasn’t even given us full episode of the story. But no matter what situation burning of the station was not a solution at all, chilipo apa muzingobelana ku chilomoniko nkumasowanso kokadandaula basi.

The thieves seem to be hitting back, these appear to be sympathisers of the bandits, that have been terrorising banks as well as filling stations, they took advantage of the sad incident @ a drinking joint. The aim is to intimidate the Police into inaction & put us all @ risk, the police are now between a hard place & a rock.

    3. victim fought again with some civilians.
    4. victim later dies.
    5. residents burn police station (in revenge).
    Question: If victim fought again (after the fight with the police officers), who inflicted the fatal wounds?

  37. Some people always want to appear wiser than they really are. You will only understand this reaction the day the police will beat a member of ur family to death! I mean, there is nothing strange here unless you are not part of the global village. Do you know how Americans react when a civilian gets killed by the police? Yet America is far much civilised than this poorest nation of ours. And you come here to show how wise you are by telling us what you think is a proper way kf reacting to police brutality? You think if the matter was reported to police, it could have been acted upon? You must be so naive? Were you alive when the police killed Robert Chasowa? No police station was burnt and the matter was reported to the same lolice! Those who were alive during this time, under this very same government, learnt a bitter lesson.

Iam agreeing what Drogba has said ontop that what the the few stupid people has done to set fire at chilomoni police is totally not accepted in Malawi.if indeed you were concerned you could follow proper channel .look now no evidence will be followed to see who tortured your friend. to me I feel that those who have done this are thugs not concened people.

How do the Chilomoni residents think torching of the police station solves the problem? My fellow Malawians,we shouldn’t stop thinking. Have the police made any arrests? Please Malawians, lets not condone violence, these Chilomoni people were absolutely wrong. What if the Ministry of Internal Security suggests not to build another police station in chilomoni? who will suffer most?? won’t it be the same people that have burned down the station?? Killing someone for reasons unknown cos you’re cops is a thing of the past, unacceptable in anyway & those responsible must be punished in accordance. The people to take the law in their hands that’s another unacceptable thing as well. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Must be punished as well period.
