Irate Muslims beat up Malawi Minister Jooma in Mangochi: Confiscate MBCTtv camera

Irate Muslims in Malawi’s Muslim dominated district of Mangochi have beaten up Minister of Economic Planning, Ralph Jooma for directing television crew from the state broadcaster Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) to take video images of Muslims who were praying at the Mangochi sub mosque without permission from mosque authorities.

Eyewitness told Nyasa Times the Jooma met his fate on Saturday when he tried to tussle with the highly charged Muslims who confiscated the camera of MBCTtv crew who were also manhandled for storming into the mosque without following procedures.

“Angry Muslims led by Brother Adin, Mangochi chairperson for the mosque confiscated the cameras from MBCtv crew as soon as they started shooting. And some, even manhandled the cameramen who were failing to explain about their mission in the mosque” said the eyewitness.

However, the MBCtv crew reported the incident to  Jooma and his colleague Ibrahim Matola who were in the district on official duties.

“But when Jooma came and tried to grab the cameras from irate Muslims he was heavily beaten up and Matola upon seeing that his friend is being assaulted he run way,” said an eye witness.

Officer -In-charge for Mangochi Police station Elija Kachikuwo has confirmed of the incident, saying they are still working out on getting the Muslims return the cameras to MBCtv crew.

But Muslims are refusing to return the camera despite the police intervention on the matter maintaining that they will not return the cameras unless they are fully convinced of the motive behind shooting without permission.

Muslims in the district have been accusing officials of the ruling People’s Party  (PP) of using them for political gains.
