JB issues stern warning to Chief Juma of Mulanje

Malawi President Joyce Banda on Monday  publicly declared to deal with Traditional Authority (T/A) Juma of Mulanje District accusing the chief of harassing fellow traditional leaders, particularly village and group village headmen in the area.

The President warned T/A Juma in Thyolo when she jointly elevated Chiefs Thomas and Chimaliro from the district to senior chiefs.

Banda alleged that T/A Juma was also undermining the office of the district commissioner.

“Advise Chief Juma to stop harassing these people because I will soon get tired and act,” she directed Chief Mkando, a relation of the condemned traditional leader, who was present during the event, to relay the message.

However, despite condemning T/A Juma, the President could not openly state how the traditional leader, who shunned the event had been harassing fellow leaders.

But Nyasa Times has been informed that T/A Juma is in bad books with the governing People’s Party (PP) for showing his allegiance to the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) whose stronghold is the Lhomwe belt- Thyolo, Mulanje and Phalombe.

President Banda alleged that people in Mulanje, particularly from T/A Juma’s area, had been reporting to her about the conduct of their traditional leader and as president, she would not hesitate but to act if they complain again.

“Laws of the land are very clear, if people continue writing me to complain about the harassment as president I will have to do something about it,” she said, without elaborating.

The President also complained against other chiefs who she said were frustrating their subjects for no apparent reasons, describing the development as counterproductive.

“Let me complain and warn such chiefs against such conducts,” said the President.

However, Banda commended some chiefs in the country for their role in leading their subjects in development projects and promotion of safe motherhood initiatives.

She said as President she mostly relied on chiefs to help the country attain high levels of development.

A few months ago, the president also publicly lambasted T/A Bvumbe of Thyolo for being a Kachasu (locally brewed spirit beer) drunkard who is in most occasions carried home for being intoxicated.

T/A Bvumbwe also crossed path with PP after he condemned the ruling party for distributing party T-shirts during funeral ceremony which he observed was degrading the ceremony.
