Jeke ODPP for 3 weeks only, removed as Malawi public procurement boss
Barely three weeks after being appointed the Director of Public Procurement, Edward Jeke, has been removed from office and moved Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.
Jeke took over from Paul Taulo who was removed and redeployed to Airport Development Limited (ADL) as deputy chief executive officer.
He was working as a deputy director under Taulo.
However, government has redeployed him toEducation Ministry to be deputy director.
“Yes it is true am now with the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology as a deputy director,” Jeke confirmed.
Malawi government is in the process of transforming the Office of the Director of Public Procurement (ODPP) into the Public Procurement and Disposal of Asset Authority following the enactment of Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets (PPDA) Bill of June 2017.
PPDA will step up anti-corruption drive in the way public procurement is conducted by increasing capacity building, monitoring, oversight and regulatory activities.
According to what Taulo told told a procurement and supply management conference in Mangochi recently, PPDA will shortly replace ODPP which was established under the Public Procurement Act of 2003 which was primarily responsible for the establishment of the Malawi Institute of Procurement and Supply [Mips] in 2008.

This is the problem of giving the President powers to appoint people into government offices instead of advertising jobs to let people compete. Merit is not at the heart of the appointment but where the appointed person comes from.I stand to be corrected if my speculation is wrong. The name Jeke sounds like the man comes from the Lower Shire and I would not be surprised if he has been moved so quickly for being Sena. We are waiting to see who is going to replace him.

Malawian professionals are educated idiot. How do you accept a job as CEO of EScom and only to be redeploy educated to ADL, an institution with a complete different scope of work. There few individuals that can fit in any industry. We thought Keke was a qualified Person in public procurement. What is he going to at Ministry of Education. Procuring exercise books from Fieldyork? Let us start advertising these senior government positions to ensure fair competition
