The party has however not filled the position of vice president (south), saying the leadership is making “consultations.”

Previous holder of PP vice president (south), Brown Mpinganjira resigned from the party and secretary-general Paul Maulidi was expelled following a fall-out with the party’s leadership.

“The president of the Peoples Party HE Dr. Joyce Banda,  is pleased to announce the appointment of Hon Ralph Jooma,  the Former Minister of Economic Planning and Development, the Current Chief Whip for PP in Parliament,  to be Vice President of the Party with effect from today,” reads a statement from the party.
“The other positions of VP will remain vacant until the President finalizes consultations,” it added.

Matola has been acting in his position but was waiting for the endorsement by the party’s national executive council.

Matola who once served as minister energy during the PP’s two-year term has since pledged to help  reposition and strengthen the party in order to reclaim power from Democratic Progressive Party’s administration.

He joined PP after defecting from UDF where he was parliamentary leader.

Meanwhile, PP spokesman Ken Msonda has said the party will compete in the forthcoming byelections.

The elections will be conducted in five wards which include Luchenza Ward in Luchenza Municipal Council, Zomba Central Ward in Zomba City Council, Msikisi Ward in Mangochi Town Council, Chibanja Ward in Mzuzu City Council and Khwawa Ward in Karonga District Council.

Other major parties such as the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), United Democratic Front (UDF) and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) have also confirmed their participation in the elections.

  15. The last best thing Joyce Banda can do for her PP is to make Ralph Jooma prezdnt. This UNIMA Poly alumni southener is politically mature though young and is a serious 2024 prezdential hopeful. Let’s be frank here there’s too much regionalism in Malawi and bcoz of that akumpoto ndi apakati alibe tchansi. Anthu akummwera makes over 50% of Malawi population kungot chifukwa ngothamangathama many hav settled in the centre and north komabe amavota ngat akummwera. 18. Choose a President as soon as possible please if the repositioning has to bear fruits. With the run away Cashgate suspect you are doomed

  19. Peoples Party spokesperson should come in the open and tell us the truth.
Is Ralph Joomo’s appointment necessary at this moment or it is Joyce Banda’s move to take the party to her political base eastern region from the north in readiness for 2019 elections?
    Ken Msonda what is happening?

  20. Bwana musonda please tell us what is this nonsense we are hearing?
Does it mean jb is not coming soon?
Is the party for eastern region yaos like udf?
This is the mistake bakili muluzi made to distroy udf.
I feel sorry for my once beloved pp, chipani chitha ngati makatani!

  21. Can this be true!

bakumpoto mwazgoka mayembi para mwarima balije namwe ntchito. zaninge ku aford chipani cha bena mpoto!

  24. If it is true that the party spokesperson refused to confirm and referred the matter to matola then something is terribly not adding up. mpanikizeni musondayo what has happened anena, he is a straight forward politician.

  25. Ralph Joomo! Ooooh my foot! The youngman has nothing to offer on the ground! Political parties in malawi don’t learn fro their past mistakes.
PP failed miserably during the 2014 tripartite general elections because of such blunders when it brought in little known sosten gwengwe as running mate instead of political heavyweights the likes of khumbo kachali, sidik mia, uladi mussa or brown mpinganjira.

  26. PP itha ngati makatani!
The party’s politcal base is in the north with over 20 mos but jb is trying to shift the base by appointing people from her political home base – eastern region!
Ndale za pa malawi too much tribalism and regionalism.

  27. Chikuoneka ngati chipanichi ndi cha ku Zomba and Mangochi basi, but there are already strongholds there of UDF. Therefore let us conclude that the party is finished.
