BRICS is the acronym for an association of five major emerging national economies comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

The summit, which started on Wednesday and will end on Friday, is an international relations conference attended by the heads of state and government of the five member states.

At this 10th summit the leaders are expected to discuss international peace and security, global governance and trade issues.

This year’s summit is being held under the theme BRICS in Africa: collaboration for inclusive growth and shared prosperity in the 4th Industrial Revolution.

The BRICS members are known for their significant influence on regional affairs.

Leaders of some non-member African countries, including Malawi, have been invited and are, particularly, expected to attend a BRICS Africa Outreach Session scheduled for Friday.

On arrival at Oliver Tambo International Airport, Mutharika was welcomed by Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr Emmanuel Fabiano, High Commissioner to the Republic of South Africa, Chrissie Kaponda and representatives of the South African Government.

From the Airport, Mutharika proceeded to Capital Menlyn Maine Hotel  in Pretoria where he is being accommodated.

He was welcomed by Deputy Head of Mission, Malawi High Commission, Pretoria Gloria Bamusi, members of staff at the mission and Malawi delegates.

The summit is being held in South Africa for the second time after the first in 2013.

Now that’s great news that our president will mingle with the best of African leaders and probably one or two of BRICS leaders. There is so much merit in spending funds on these kind of trips. Just as South Africa is able to count investments arising from the Summit, I also hope that Mr President you’ll be counting the dollars coming Malawi’s way. This may just your chance to prove your critics wrong otherwise it will also be the other way……that you don’t know how to leverage of international relations.

Has anybody wondered? It appears the president makes a lot visits to other countries but has any president come to Malawi since APM assumed office in 2014? Other than Mugabe et al, who came on the inaugural ceremony?
Even Mnangagwa has been to all our neighbouring countries except Malawi.
But generally in life people do not want to be associated with BAD company.

Where is the joviality in Mutharika or it is just wishful thinking? He can never be jovial. The man is simply pretending to be in that state if anything, but he is completely disturbed. he will one soon collapse, just wait for the mother of all UTM rallies at Mnjamba Freedom Park on Sunday.

Chrissie Chaponda and Gloria Bamusi are relations to George Chaponda aka Chaponda Chimanga and Mavuto Bamusi respectively. DPP siyidzatheka. Somebody once said We cannot remove corruption in DPP but We can remove DPP from government. Let us just do the needful come 2019. Politics of “wakwathu ndani” is killing the nation.

I don’t know about Chrissie Chaponda, but Gloria Bamusi is a career foreign service professional with qualifications form UNIMA and a postgrad diploma from Oxford. I’m sure she’s there not because of Mavuto Bamusi. And I hate nepotism especially the ugly mulhakho nepotism. Gloria is from Ntcheu btw.
