Malawi’s giant mobile phone operator Airtel on Tuesday handed over a brand new Kia Rio saloon worth K8 million to Yohane Mshanga who emerged as the grand winner in the Timaitha Promotion that officially came to an end a forthnight ago.

Speaking after the handover ceremony a visibly excited Mshanga,  a second-hand clothes businessperson from Kamwendo Trading Centre in Mchinji, commended Airtel for the promotions.

“I will sell the car and I hope to invest the money into a big business and probably I will buy a new house because I have been renting my house,” said Mshanga, 29, flanked by his wife.

Airtel Malawi Marketing Director Tanmoiy Saha described the promotion as a success, saying the company’s goal of uplifting lives of its customers was achieved during the promotion.

“We launched Timaitha SMS Promotion in December last year, at a time when the country was experiencing an economic downturn. Companies were scaling out operations. Some were downsizing on their expenditures. However, despite the economic problems, we felt it was necessary to launch it. Our aim was to bolster incomes of subscribers at a time their earnings were at the lowest ebb” said Saha.

He said the company had spent over K30 million in the promotion with K14 million being spent in cash prizes, K8 million on the vehicle and the rest being spent on administrative expenses in running the promotion.

The promotion ran from December 27 to March 26, 2013.
