Judge and lawyers descend on scene of horrific killing as maid’s chilling testimony continues

A dramatic scene inspection unfolded at the Lilongwe residence of murdered Reserve Bank of Malawi employee Agnes Katengeza this morning, as the High Court descended on the property in Area 49, Baghdad, as part of the ongoing murder trial.

The unusual move came after both the State and the defence jointly applied for the inspection, a request granted by presiding Judge Bruno Kalemba as the case continues to unfold.

At the property, chilling testimony continued from Rabecca Batison, Katengeza’s former housemaid and the State’s sixth witness, who has been giving a gripping first-hand account of events in the days surrounding the killing.

Batison previously told the court that on the fateful morning in September 2023, she had been carrying out her usual household duties while Amos Katengeza was outside washing Agnes’ vehicle, apparently in preparation for her departure.

She went on to describe the horrifying scene that unfolded the following day, when people began arriving at the residence en masse — having learned through social media that Agnes had been found dead.

Agnes Katengeza was murdered on September 23, 2023, in a case that shocked the nation. Her body was discovered the following day, stuffed in the boot of her own car behind Lilongwe Gateway Mall.

Director of Criminal Litigation in the Directorate of Public Prosecutions, Dzikondianthu Malunda, is leading the prosecution’s case, while accused Amos Katengeza and Egnat Katengeza are being represented by lawyers Kavu Kaphwiti Banda and Khumbo Soko respectively.

The trial continues.
