Judge Nyakwawa Usiwausiwa killed in car accident

High Court judge Nyakwawa Usiwausiwa reported dead following a traffic accident in Lilongwe.

It has been confirmed by the Registrar of the High Court and Supreme Court of Appeal, Jack N’riva that indeed Justice Usiwausiwa has passed on.

He was involved in an accident on the bypass road in Lilongwe.

N’riva said he died at around 3 o’clock in the afternoon at Kamuzu Central Hospital where he was rushed to following the accident.

Before being appointed judge, Usiwa-Usiwa was serving as Registrar of the High Court and Supreme Court of Malawi in Blantyre.

He was promoted after serving as Chief Resident Magistrate Court in Blantyre where he was famed for passing lengthy deterrent sentences to convicts including the 14 years jail term for a gay couple Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga. The two were given presidential pardon,

Usiwa-Usiwa a graduate of the University of Malawi had joined media profession after he first graduated at Chancellor College. He worked with Times Group (formerly Blantyre Newspapers Limited) for s short stint before he enrolled back at Chancellor College for a law degree.

He then joined the judiciary starting as a Magistrate before rising through the ranks.

Recently,  he has put his demands to Judiciary to allocate him a new official car.

In October last year, President Peter  Mutharika appointed four new judges Joseph Chigona, Ruth Chinangwa, Dorothy De Gabrielle and George Bakuwa who died suddenly during a tour of duty in Lusaka, Zambia barely a month after his appointment.

Details of his burial are not yet known.

Very brilliant young man from old goods in both at primary and secondary school. He was even helping those detained (rotting) in prison without trial, speaking for the speechless souls. Oh God have mercy to the beleaved family

Reminds me of our good o’le days when you were at Nyambadwe Lions Primary School then to Chichiri Secondary School before going to Chancellor College and then became a Secondary school teacher went back to Chancellor College to study Law and became a Magistrate, Registrar of High Court and then Supreme Court and finally a High Court Judge…..What an inspiring journey but was this to be your end a ‘mfumu’ as we used to mockyour name at Nyambadwe Primary as small kids not knowing that you will be a judge .
