Kaferapanjira hired as new PS for Ministry of Trade-report

President  Joyce Banda has appointed one of staunch critics of the previous regime, Chancellor Kaferapanjira, as principal secretary in the Ministry of Trade and Industry replacing long serving Newby Kumwembe, a midweek Business Times newspaper reported.

Kumwembe has been moved to Finance Ministry as PS responsible for administration.

However, Kaferapanjira, Chief Executive Officer for Malawi Confederation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI), feigned ignorance on the matter.

Said Kaferapanjira: “I’m still here at the chamber and I have neither received any letter nor been communicated to by anyone on the appointment. But I have also heard that rumour and I will take it as such.”

But in separate interview his counterpart Kumwembe confirmed about the changes saying he already received a letter from the Office of President and Cabinet (OPC).

“I’m reporting for duties next week as PS for the Ministry of Finance responsible for administration,” confirmed Kumwembe.

If the report is anything to go by,  then Kaferapanjira brings to an end what some pundits describe as an ‘illustrious’ decade he has been as CEO of MCCCI.

While others contend that his joining of the civil service would elude the country the opportunity to provide checks and balances as he will no longer be in better position to criticize a government he is part of.
