Kaliati backs ‘foul-mouthed’ First Lady

By Wanga Gwede, Nyasa Times

Director of Women Affairs in the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Patricia Kaliati has backed the ‘foul mouthed’ First Lady Callista Mutharika, who told leaders of the civil society organizations to “go to hell”.

Kaliati, who was fired from cabinet, said the First Lady had a right to her opinion.

She was speaking when President Bingu wa Mutharika threw a party to vendors and his youth cadets on Sunday.

Callista told NGO leaders “to go to hell” because they are “getting money from donors to advance the rights of the minority” and that they are destroying her husband’s government.

Kaliati: Callista has a right to her opinion

Speaking as if to get favours from the President, Kaliati told off leaders of the civil society organizations who tore Callista apart for her remarks.

“Leave her alone. She is the mother for everybody. She also has the right to her express herself. There is freedom of expression in this country,” said Kaliati.

Despite favouring Callista, well-placed sources claim that the First Lady contributed to Kaliati’s dismissal from cabinet based on jealousy and tit for tat.
