Kalinde visits sexually assaulted girl, JB to support her

Minister of Gender, children and social welfare Anita Kalinde has disclosed that President Mrs. Joyce Banda will offer  educational support to a three-year-old Dowa girl who was defiled by her 50 year-old uncle.

The uncle – Medison Gomani – sexually assaulted his niece in his maize garden, after he got advice from a South-African-based herbalist that he sleeps with his daughter or niece as a ritual that his tobacco would fetch healthier prices.

Kalinde visited  the girl’s parents at Mbayo Village, Traditional Authority Chakhaza in Dowa.

Kalinde: President Banda will offer the girl educational support

She said President Banda learnt about the sexual abuse in the media  and was “deeply saddened” such that she has pledged to provide educational support to the girl up to a self reliant level.

“As a mother, Her Excellency President Banda has also ordered that the girl gets further treatment and medical check-up at Mwaiwathu Hospital and will provide K100, 000 for transport costs to and from the hospital,” said Kalinde.

Her ministry also donated blankets and assorted items to the victim.

The rapist, who was sentenced to eight years imprisonment with hard labour by the Mponela First Grade Magistrate Court and is since serving the sentence at Maula prison, defiled her on April 30 2012 and told the court that the incident was only but the work of the devil.

Meanwhile, both Kalinde and the victim’s mother lamented that the sentence meted on the rapist was manifestly inadequate.
