Kapito brands Malawi ex-VP Kachali ‘greedy politician’
Renowned human rights activist and head of Consumers Association of Malawi (CAMA), John Kapito has dismissed claims by former vice president Khumbo Kachali that his late endorsement of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in the run up to the May elections was not out of political greed.
Kachali told the press on Monday that he did not support DPP’s Peter Mutharika’s candidature in anticipation for government appointments.
But Kapito told Nyasa Times that Kachali’s late endorsement of DPP was out of frustration.
“It is obvious enough to every sensible person that Honorable Kachali only started praising DPP when he knew that he was about to be dumped by the Peoples Party (PP) and when he was aware he was not going to be picked as a running mate to the PP’s presidential candidate,” said Kapito.
He added: “Throughout the almost two-year term of Joyce Banda’s leadership, Hon. Kachali was one of the senior PP officials who were in the forefront castigating the same DPP and its leadership including late Bingu wa Mutharika and its followers.”
Kapito went on further attacking Kachali for being part of the Joyce Banda’s administration that messed up the country with Malawians experiencing a lot of challenges such as increases in prices of goods and service, food shortages as well as the famous looting of tax-payers’ money at the Capitol Hill under Cashgate scandal in which over K13 billion was stolen.
The outspoken activist labelled Kachali as a politician without enough muscle to swing votes for any party and especially DPP and its candidature, adding he is simply looking for sympathy and favours from the current administration.
“No Malawian voted for DPP because of Kachali’s influence or assistance. In actual fact Hon. Kachali was one of the reasons the Peoples Party lost the election miserably. Has Hon. Kachali forgotten that he was the same person who defended Joyce Banda’s never ending unnecessary travels to the point of telling Malawians that Joyce Banda does not visit their mothers’ homes?
“Has Hon. Kachali forgotten that he was one of the people who constantly reminded Malawians of how evil DPP was and the need of not voting it back into power? We wish to remind Hon. Kachali that Malawians are not stupid and he should desist from making himself a Saint of doom.”
Kapito said Kachali doesn’t need a reminder of the controversial incident in which he orchestrated removal of hospital beds from Mponela hospital to Mzimba Hospital for his political campaign.
CAMA boss explained: “The behavior of Hon. Kachali only shows how greedy some of our politicians can be when they are desperate for power. It is important to remind Hon. Kachali that Malawians have not forgotten the insults they suffered when he was Vice-President by accident.”
