Karonga man burned for vandalising Escom transformer

A 22-year-old-man is nursing serious burns after been attacked when he was trying to vandalize a transformer for Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) in northern district of Karonga.

Karonga Police Officer In-Charge Foster Mangani identified the man as James Karambo of Village Headman Mwawembe in the area of paramount chief Kyungu.

Mangani said they found the man on Friday morning at around 3am at Wiwa, North West part of Karonga when people around the ESCOM transformer tipped them about the incident.

“It was around 3am when well-wishers tipped us that they are seeing strange faces around their apartment and when we went there, we found a man laying down a transformer pole backbone with serious burns,” said Mangani.

Mangani said the man told the police during interrogation that he was with his four friends from Tanzania but they run away when they saw that he has been electrocuted.

He said the man has been referred to Karonga district hospital for medical treatment.

“As of now we have sent him to the hospital for medical treatment and there after he will answer charges of theft while we are searching the four Tanzanians to answer the same charges”, said Mangani.
