Kasaila, Mcheka fall as DPP only retains a ward in by-elections: Abida Mia proves MCP Lower Shire giant
Main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has a dismal performance` in by-elections Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) conducted on Tuesday in seven constituencies and two wards failing to return three seats and managed only to win elections in Balaka Liviridzi ward.

Unofficial results for Nsanje Central Constituency has favoured Kafandikhale Mandevana of Malawi Congress Party (MCP) with 8,230 votes, trouncing Francis Kasaila, a former cabinet minister in the DPP administration, who got 6,648 votes.
Nzeru Mybeck of UTM got 331 votes while Esmy Bande of Depeco finished with 72 votes.
The constituency, was first won by Kasaila during the 2019 tripartite elections but Mandevana challenged the results through the Court after MEC declared the former as a winner, citing a plethora of irregularities.
This prompted the Court to order MEC to conduct another election within 60 days.
Court also ordered MEC to conduct the by-elections in Nsanje North and Chikwawa East due to similar reasons.
At least, 24,262 people were registered to cast their votes but only 15,422 went to exercise their voting right.
In Nsanje North Constituency, Esther Mcheka Chilenje (DPP) has also been defeated by Enoch Masautso-Chizuzu of MCP and Sam Khumbanyiwa of United Democratic Front (UDF) was leading to reclaim Chikwawa East Constituency after the High Court nullified their 2019 victory over widespread irregularities.
The by-elections has proved Abida Mia, deputy minister of labour as new political giant for the Lower Shire stepping in from her late husband Mo Sidik Mia as she marshelled the campaign in the areas.
Mandevana credite Abida Mia and entire MCP team which was deployed to the area for their “dedication and sacrifices” in the gruelling campaign.
DPP has also failed to return Karonga Northwest as unofficial results for show that UTM Party candidate Felix Katwaff Kaira has won with 9, 537 votes.
MCP’s Daniel Mwanyongo Chitonya came second with 9, 207 votes.
Out of the 53, 000 registered voters, only 25, 689 voters turned up to cast their votes representing about 49.9 percent with 136 votes declared null and void.
In Zomba Changalume, People’s Party (PP) has failed to return the seat which has gone to an independent candidate.
MCP has also won seats in Ntchisi North West and Lilongwe Msinja South.
But DPP has only managed to win back Liviridzi ward in Balaka West with its candidate Lucius Elia elected councillor in the election which was marred by voter apathy.
With only 6,220 casted votes out of the initial 24,160 registered voters, Elia amassed 2,191 votes beating UTM party candidate Richard Koloko Alli who got 1,618 votes.
UDF candidate Stande Nguyeje who once served as a councillor for the area came out third during the by-elections.
Pollster, MEC is expected to announce official results of the by-elections on Thursday 1 April ,2021. – Additional reporting by. Ayamba Kandodo, Jordan Phiri and George Banda -MEC Stringer

The truth of the matter is that DPP rigged their wins in Nsanje and Chikwawa during the May 2019 elections. What has happened during the just held by-election is the true reflection of the wishes of the electorate.
No worries for Kasaila……he will now go global with his pornstar career ….
DPP dont fool yourself, you deserve to lose, in 9 months Malawians can not forget your evil, corrupt, nepostic rule and dont think they will in 10 years, you will follow your political friends of UDF slowly by slowly, kutha ngati makatani. In 10 years DPP will only have MPs from lomwe region and none from centre and north unless otherwise.
DPP supporters know what they want and my advice to the party is to stop forthwith forcing leadership on it’s supporters as it appears to be with APM’s favourite Kabambe, otherwise they are are driving the party fast into permsnent opposition. Secondly, they should reign in the likes of BJ and Mphepo whose every moves are disasterous.
New and youthful leadership is the answer.

As long as DPP is not willing to clean-up their house and continue with the infighting, this losing trend will continue till 2025. In the Lower Shire MCP has won because of money and not principles because they have nothing to show to the public which can resonate well with human beings, there is nothing new the party has devised other than prose. With too many amateurs in the party, dislodging them is easy. Time is the best teacher and yardstick. Let us give them the benefit of doubt anyway. With all the numerous greedy members all vying for leadership… Read more »
True. Our DPP’s loss is about lack of leadership. People especially iliterate Senas of lower shire had no better option but to dive into the crocodile 🐊 party of MCP because of Abida mia’s noise. Imagine UDF has won one MP seat while DPP has lost three of theirs. Isn’t this shameful? Wake up DPP. We love you. Get your house in order. Hold the convention earlier. Don’t believe in what Brown Mpinganjira is saying, he is not the winning formula for our dear party of DPP.
Kodi agogo uthenga waafika ku Mangochi?
Dpp has no leadership are currently battling on ground and hence their supporters have no direction. Not suprising for dismal performance in the by- elections.
Let me remind readers that Malawi Congress Party had a huge following in Lower Shire in fact the entire southern region during the struggle for independence in 1964. MCP does not need Abida Mia to revive MCP’s support and be the kingmaker for southern region, voters are just coming back to MCP. Some of the great’s of the independence movement were from Lower Shire and included Gwanda so MCP has been in these constituencies since 1958, Abida is simply being given too much underserved credit. If any individual deserves credit it is Frank T Mwenifumbo who as Publicity Secretary of… Read more »
Sorry ife a MCP we always give thanks to those we want, so to hell with your History, Abida is doing her part. congratulation Mama Mia, continue the good work. azimai ambiri are admiring your style. izizi izi ndi nkhwidzi, sanje, kadukaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa kikkkkkkk!
Is that why Chakwera did not attend the funeral of Abida’s husband. Grow up be real, or even the Vice President or a senior Minister was delegated to attend the funeral. Which MCP are you belonging to Hon Judge?
Are you joking. Who is Abida Mia compared to the mighty MCP? There have been many Malawian women who gave their lives during the independence struggle facing bullets of colonists at Nkhata Bay
Abida Mia woyee!!!
nsanje bwanji? The lady has done a good job. Today’s voters are not awo a 1964 mukunena inuwo.
Abida Mia is a hard worker,, nsanje bwanji? Thats why mukulephera kutukuka. Give credit where it is due
People who have no respect for history have no understanding of the world
YOU GOT A PROBLEM,
its either you ain’t abida miya fan or you just hate her. everyone knows kuti she is a hard worker, she is a goal getter. winning seat from the palms of dpp should not be taken lightly. I truly salute her for that.
imagine beating Kasaila, Dalitso Kabambe and Brown Mpinganjira. its not a joke….
Make Abida the President as everyday she does something that which proves Chakwera is failing big time. Abida is supergirl!! She would do for Malawi what she has done for Lower Shire, she would develop the whole country! Long live Abida
ziwutha zitanhi tilipaumboyo pa Abida, akhaladi Presidanti basi
so why were you failing in the past election. give credit where is due
Mwenefumbo himself lost as MP so why should he get credit?
Mweifumbo was cheated out of a huge victory.
Tsano ife titengere hisitre ya 1964 kuti ipanga aphulayi in 2021? What kind of thinking is this? Chonchi sitingatukukeyi. If your history applied, we could have had MCP winning in all these election years.
