Kasambara was kept at juvenile jail for security reasons – Malawi Prison
Malawi Prison Services (MPS) have explained that former Minister of Justice, Ralph Kasambara -currently answering to attempt murder charge – was detained at Kachere Juvenile Prison in Lilongwe which is not for adults on security reasons.
“He was kept there purely for security reasons,” Prison spokesperson Evans Phiri said. He did not elaborate.
Kasambara has since been transferred to Zomba Central Prison. While waiting for ruling on his bail bid scheduled for November 22.
One of Malawi’s most influential and controversial lawyers, Kasambara was arrested in Lilongwe on November 8 2013 on suspicion that he played a role in the shooting of budget director Paul Mphwiyo.
Kasambara, one of the country’s prominent lawyers and a senior counsel (SC), his former bodyguard, Keston Gani and Pika Manondo have been charged with attempting to murder Ministry of Finance budget director Paul Mphwiyo in Lilongwe’s Area 43 residential estate on September 13 this year.
Bullets which were found in Mphwiyo’s body have allegedly been traced to a gun belonging to Gani, a police officer who was on duty when Kasambara was heading the Ministry of Justice.
Government claims Phwiyo, 37 was gunned down because was about to expose massive theft in government.
