KB says referees incompetence killing football in Malawi

Kamuzu Barracks  Team Manager Francis Nthukwa Shaba says football in Malawi will never develop because most of the referees are incompetent.

Nthukwa Shaba made the remarks following his side’s 4-1 defeat to Super League defending champions Nyasa Big Bullets at the Kamuzu Stadium on Sunday.

This follows a penalty referee Evidence Kananji awarded the ‘peoples team’ to take the lead when the game was at 1-1.

The KB Team Manager believes the penalty was not genuine.

He also claimed that Central Region teams struggle when they are playing away-in the south or in the north because the referees favour teams from the two regions unlike in the central regions where referees are always neautral and professional.

The KB official therefore called upon the Super League of Malawi (Sulom), Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and all other relevant authorities to join hands and make sure that many youthful referees are being trained in order to phase out the current crop of ‘old and tired’ referees.

Shaba has also asked Sulom to consider increasing the perks of referees which they receive per game to reduce cases of bribery.

“We make so much money at the gates and Sulom must increase the amount of money they pay the referees maybe they can be officiating professionally” said Nthukwa Shaba.
