Key ‘suspect’ into Malawi soldier killing arrested: Syvester Mzumara

Police in Lilongwe have arrested a key suspect, Sylvester Mzumara, 26,from  Mtawali Village in the area of  Traditional Authority  Wasambo in  Karonga District in connection to the murder of Chipiliro Chiwere from Kamuzu Barracks.

Chiwere was killed in Area 44 in Lilongwe after being stabbed with a screwdriver at the chest Friday.

National Police Publicist Rhoda Manjolo has confirmedthe arrest.

Manjolo said the suspect works  for Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe as procurement clerk.

Facts of the matter which led to the death of the soldier are that on that particular day the victim was with his friend from Area 23 and on their way back to the Barracks they saw another vehicle joining the main road very close to them and when  they [victim and friend] saw that, they stopped their vehicle and came out, a quarrel erupted and they started fighting and in the process the unknown person stabbed the victim (now deceased) .

He was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

“Let us avoid unnecessary quarrels in order to avoid losing lives, let’s be patient and learn to accommodate each other when using our roads,” advised Manjolo.

She however said Police were at a “critical stage” of the investigation.

Manjolo said she could not give any further information.

    however most people think they are heroes if they become soldiers.a lot of people are beaten and humiliated by soldiers on the road,streets,stadiums and even beer drinking points.

Too much road rage on Malawian roads and driving licences obtained in a crooked way.Sometimes our own soldiers are also to blame.They don’t have discipline in drinking joints.They think being a soldier can get away with anything.They start fighting anyhow.I had an opportunity living in Uk but I never saw soldiers misbehaving like in Malawi,yet these are soldiers who have been sent into dangerous missions even though I don’t condone the behaviour of the suspect squeezing the life of the soldier in that way.Soldiers and civilians should live in harmony.Some soldiers are our uncles,boyfriends,girlfriend etc.We should love to learn one another and live in harmony.

  47. This is very very unfortunate. RIP my Brother. As for the killer, I say GOD, it is your duty now.
    One WORD: This was an avoidable death. In the USA, soldiers like our dear MDF are treated in high esteem. They are heavily respected by the general American public. They are always their heroes. Wherever they go, the public cheer them. Why? As long as the soldiers are on the American soil, they the soldiers themselves, conduct nobly. They do not attack their own people, the public, on petty issues. They avoid petty quarrels against the people. They protect their noble recognition in the society as long as they are on the American soil. This protects their dignity and respect. In turn, cases of petty quarrels between American Soldiers against their general public are very low. However, here the soldiers feel they are above the law.

  63. Road rage is a bitch, people travel with weapons on the road and the last thing I do when driving is to pick up an altercation on the road. Be smart and selfless share the road since no one man owns the road and this should save as a lesson to the like minded people. Leave some stuff to relevant authorities (i.e.) traffic cops. As a professional driver, I never get out of my car at night to talk to strangers even if they pressed all my wrong buttons.
