Mutharika congratulates Wanderers on Carlsberg Cup victory: Consoles Chilima and BB fans
Malawi President Peter Mutharika has spiced up Mighty Be Forward Wanderers’ victory in the Carlsberg Cup final with a congratulation message.
Wanderers clinched a 2-1 victory over their rivals Big Bullets in a highly tempered affair at Civil Stadium on Saturday.
And on Sunday, Mutharika congratulated the blue camp popularly called ‘Nyerere’ for beating their rivals to lift the trophy.
Mutharika said: ”My hearty congratulations to the Mighty Be Forward Wanderers on the deserved and decisive win against a really impressive team, the Big Bullets in the Carlsberg Cup finale”.
It was Wanderers’ first time cup final encounter with their arch-rivals since the two sides’ Carlsberg Cup final was abandoned in 2003 due to violence that erupted following a disallowed goal for the
Nomads.
And Mutharika, in a message posted on his Facebook Page, said was impressed with conduct of the supporters as the game ended peacefully without protest or violence.
”Congratulations to the supporters from both teams also for being lively and peaceful. I keenly followed the game on MBCTv. While the players on the field proved their skill and expertise with the ball, the large turn- out of their supporters in the stands stood tall with their exemplary behaviour,” said Mutharika.
”Despite their various affiliations, they chanted, cheered and shouted; that’s the unity we want if Malawi is to move forward. Well done also to the sponsors and all involved in such a colourful finale”.
The President then consoled his vice, Saulos Chilima who supports Bullets and the club for the loss.
”To the Vice President and all Big Bullets fans, I say sorry for the hurting loss. We all know how painful it is to lose in a final-cup. My heart goes out to all of you.,” said the Head of State.
“Losing is part of the game. If you never lose, you are never truly tested, and never forced to grow. Losing is only temporary and not all encompassing. You must simply study it, learn from it, and try hard not to lose the same way again,” comforted Mutharika in his message.
Mutharika has since pledged to continue working with all stakeholders complementing government’s efforts in sports development.

Leadership is mainly about paying attention to the small details of one’s people, identifying with their daily lives. Mr President, you have demonstrated oneness with your fellow Malawians, celebrating with those who are victorious and empathysing with those on the loosing side, whilst encouraging them to aim higher next time, because as you rightly pointed, there can only be one winner in a compétition. To me this is exactly the essence of leadership. Thank you Mr President for your fatherly message!
big up mr president but tell us which club you follow.
