Killer driver of Mercedes Benz truck arrested

Malawi Police have arrested  a 36 year old man for causing death by driving.

Kanengo Police Deputy Public Relation Officer (DPRO) Salome Chibwana identified the deceased as Esnart Banda 60 years-old from chibonga village Traditional Authority (T/A) Gomani of Ntcheu.

Chibwana said Banda was hit by a Mercedes Benz 1820 truck registration number CF78PNGP/NGP184GP driven by Robert Longwe aged 36, from Mkosana village, T/A Chindi of Mzimba at Lilongwe Teachers Training College (LTTC) area.

According to Chibwana, “The vehicle was coming from Mgona location going to Area 25 and upon reaching LTTC the trailer of the truck hooked the victim and overrun on her when it was turning left”.

Chibwana said the accident occurred on January 4, 2017, around 15:40 hours.

She said postmortem conducted at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) indicates that death was due to serious head injuries and internal bleeding.

The Deputy PRO further said the driver will answer charges of causing death.

In related development, a serious road accident happened at the same place on the same day at around 17:50 hours whereby a Toyota Hiace registration number BU 4984 hit unknow woman pedestrian who was crossing the road from LTTC to Mgona.

The vehicle was being driven by Henry Zengeza, 59 year-old, from village Zamani T/A Chakhumbira, Ntcheu.

Chibwana said the victim sustained severe head injuries and fracture on the right leg and was referred to KCH.

Both drivers are in custody and will appear in court soon.

I am surprised. What was the woman waiting for until caught by the trailer? It would have made sense if she was hit by the horse of the truck.

Why wait until someone dies to act? There are a lot of UNROADWORTHY vehicles, drivers and practices on the roads of Malawi yet nothing ever happens to check them…
