Kyungu censors churches in politics ahead of Malawi watershed elections

Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa on Monday censored churches that he said are peddling partisan politics in the run up to the May 21 2019 watershed tripartite elections.

Kyungu: Churches should not impose candidates on people

Speaking in Chitipa during  the official opening of the Kasama Community Technical College in Chitipa, Kyungu did not name the churches.

“The Church is not an authority on party politics. The church should not be dictating on its membership who to vote for. It is wrong,” said Kyungu.

Speaking when he stood to welcome President Peter Mutharika at Chitipa Airfield,  Kyungu said he was concerned that as Malawi draws close to the voting day, some churches have abandoned their prophetic role and opted to be partisan.

“The church draws membership from people from all political parties. Don’t use it as a hostage place for partisan politics,” he fumed.

Kyungu encouraged the people to follow their conscious when voting.

“You all have your right to make a choice. Don’t be threatened by the church. Make your own choices,” Kyungu emphasized.

The Chief’s remarks comes days after the Nkhoma Synod of the CCAP issued a scathing pastoral letter which some observers said was more like endorsing Malawi Congress Party (MCP) presidential hopeful Dr Lazarus Chakwera who is a member of the Church.

The Paramount Chief also cautioned politicians that are making over confident remarks about their prospects of winning the elections.

“This is a competition. Malawians will choose but some of you politicians are making statement as if you have already won. That’s dangerous. We don’t want war here,” Kyungu said.

Kyungu said there is a new bleed of politicians that are so disrespectful and pompous such that their behavior poses a serious threat to peace in Malawi.

He warned all candidates to also prepare their supporters for life after losing the elections .

Kyungu is an educated man and  a former civil servant.

  1. A point of correction to Kyungu is as follows: Traditional Chiefs just like yourself Kyungu should not impose candidates on their followers. As Traditional Chiefs, you are not an authority on party politics. As chiefs you should not be dictating on the followers’ membership who to vote for. It is wrong, and I emphatically say that what you, paramount Kyungu are doing is wrong.

I as a Malawian am concerned that as we draw close to the voting day, some chiefs like iweyo Kyungu, Ngolongoliwa, Lundu, Lukwa etc have abandoned their traditional role and have opted to be partisan and become a “second cohort of dpp cadets”. Sincerely you deserve the treatment Bishop Mtumbuka proposed during the PAC organized prayers.

Don’t try to be clever yourself! Traditional leaders look after members of all political parties. You therefore should not use your positions as a hostage positions for partisan politics. Mukuchitazo ndi za utsilu weniweniiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!

  2. Old age comes with wisdom that’s what we believe it seems that it’s the opposite . This Chief is talking about non partisan and when it comes to churches, he was supposed to tell that to his subjects, the Chiefs who are in the forefront campaigning for Peter Mutharika. Churches sadly don’t fall under Chiefs jurisdiction so he doesn’t have the powers. And when you enter a race you must be confident otherwise you mustn’t cos it’s the self confidence that brings the urge

  3. Osanenaponso kuti some of his Colleageus/Mafumu enanso like achina Ngongoliwa, Lundu…samachitabwino when endorsing candidates bwanji?

  4. ONE CAN BE PARAMOUNT CHIEF, YET BE POOR. SO IF OPPORTUNITY ARISES TO BE REWARDED WITH A CHAIRMANSHIP HERE, BOARD MEMBER THERE-why not take sides

    1. ukumudziwanso bravo chief you have observed well. akumatiopseza akamayankhula atakwiya akharupa amenewa

  5. Kyungu the Gospel is preached to those who want to hear it and those who don not. where do you get authority to say such words. Just shut up

  6. but correct for chiefs to be partisan? sir if you don’t like Chilima just say but the youth will vote for him and his confidence inspires us

  7. But Kyungu himself shamelessly supports DPP and Mutharika despite being a paramount over subjects with different political affiliations.

    1. @ Kaka

Who is wise Iwo?. Kyungu?. Kwee Iwo atatawana ndi a fyopoli kabisa aake. Kyungu njeru wazitenga kuti kuti imwe munthu mufyopoli ngati ameneyu. Va mthira basi . Iwo owewera kupunda.

  8. Ine Kyungu amandinyansa ndisaname!

Nayenso as chief he is supposed to be neutral but he supports Mutharika. Prepare yourself for life after Mutharika’s shameful fall.

  9. Censor yourself first. After doing that censor your fellow chiefs led by Lukwa who are campaigning for DPP and also don’t forget to censor this lunatic from lower shire called Lundu . Mukamalizire angongoliwa with your censorship mr kyungu. Hypocrite is what you are.

  10. If Malawians were to vote against abolishing chieftainships I would do that because of Kyungu, Lundu, Lukwa, Tsabango, Kaomba, and a few others from Ntchisi. Kyungu is reproaching the churches yet he is doing the same thing. The churches are at least doing a good job to speak against thieves like Mutharika. Why should the churches back a president who is stealing our taxes? Why should the churches back poor development? Why should the churches back tribalism? Iwe Kyungu you are a disgrace to northerners. You deserve death You deserve no burial after death. You should be food for scavengers just like APM. You are silent killers. You are killing the north through quota system of education A girl with 17 points and from poor parents is a victim of the quota system. A boy with 13 points from Rumphi is a victim of the quota system of education. Please choose other people not mbava iyi Pitala and Kyungu.

  11. 100% correct Paramount Chief Kyungu. The church and some Islamic Clergy led by Mufti Sosola of Salima are driven by human dryers. Voting is a conscious act and not biblical or koranic. The religious leaders of Nkhoma Synod and Mr Sosola should shut up with their tarasimu.

  12. Kyungu I have lost respect for you. You are an idiot. Ever since biblical times, priests and churches have acted as guides of the people and that is what they are doing. You are the supposedly independent chief who is literally campaigning for DPP. You are an idiot and a half

  13. The Mteme wa ateme is too partisan to be listened to. He is a true reflection of ” remove your beam in your eye before you can remove your brother’s speck in his eye “

  14. And you.? Who are you? A politician or just a T/A. Its gonna end this month what you get from your DPP friends. Don’t fight with the church. You lose.

  15. He and Mwakasungula are partisan too. They all belong to DPP and have seats in boards of parastatal organizations. They live and eat politics. Churches have roles to guide their followers in making right leadership choices because putting unholy people in leadership positions is sinful too. Leadership by its meaning means influencing followers practices and behaviours. In all his speeches why did not condemn attempted abduction of pastor’s child, mental abuse of women, theft of public resource and nepotism. Holy spirit fulled clerics and chiefs have roles to direct their followers away from such leaders Eze 33. Lastly the laws of Malawi do not recognise chiefs beyond their districts of residence. It is there against the law to be calling him chief of CP and KA. The Chief’s Act was rightly interpreted for him.

  16. What a foolish man Kyungu is! Kyungu has the audacity to condemn churches that influence voters but he himself is at the podium supporting useless Peter Mutharika to continue ruling the country that he has messed up. This is not the time for old leaders ,it’s time for the young generation to take charge .Kyungu is obsolete and irrelevant to Karongans, he has no right to tell voters what to do. If he is happy with Peter Mutharika’s leadership ,then he should go to hell with him.

  17. Are these words really coming from Kyungu? When did he realise what he is saying? Kyungu is an educated man, a former civil servant and a partisan chief. Is he still Chief for Chitipa, after the court ruling that he be restricted to Karonga only?
