Lawi returns with ‘Zonena Kuchuluka’, discusses new album

Wine tastes better with time, and so is Lawi’s music.

Lawi comes with new music

From ‘High Morale’, ‘Amenyele’, ‘Amati Andikawe’, ‘Amaona Kuchedwa’ to
the recently released ‘Zonena Kuchuluka’, Lawi continues to show maturity, consistency and versatility both as a singer and producer.

Lawi started off as a rapper. His first two hit singles which took over mainstream radio were Hip Hop songs. As they say, “Sky is the
limit”, Lawi didn’t confine himself in doing one genre. He kept experimenting and found his own style which has been accepted by a
wider audience.

Having released his last album in 2013, Lawi is back with ‘Sunset in the sky’ album which carries the single ‘Zonena Kuchuluka’. The single has already gone viral on social media platforms and it’s a certified hit.

But what took him so long to bounce back? Lawi explains, “I believe in taking my time. Some can take a very short period of time in the studio and equally come out with great stuff, it just doesn’t work that way with me. I work best when I have space and time to think
through all the processes involved in making beautiful music and there is no harm in doing so.”

He adds, “The years that go by whilst in production can be translated into experience and a great opportunity to let life reveal its meaning to one. You will be amazed at what beautiful art time has been able to reveal in the human journey all over the world.

“We gather very interesting and important facts of life through time and rushing can sometimes mean loss. All the information we gather through time can be a very important part in the art as the music is not just for the musician but the people.”

Speaking to Nyasa Times on Sunday, Lawi disclosed that ‘Sunset in the sky’ is coming out this summer, saying the team is currently working on making the album easily available to the public.

“You will find 21 songs in the album and I wrote, composed, arranged and produced them. As soon as our distribution is through we shall announce dates for release and events in and outside of Malawi,” says the multi-talented musician.

According to Lawi, ‘Sunset in the sky’ was inspired by dreams.

“As a young person growing up in Malawi we used to shout ‘Ndege ndege!’ each time we saw and heard the sound of the Aeroplane. That
left us wondering what it felt like like being on the plane and wishing if we could someday experience flying on an Aeroplane. I have
had that feeling with me throughout the different stages of my life and the dream to one day fly inspired me to work hard and make it happen. You can imagine the joy and fulfillment I had flying for the first time.

“I have enjoyed many flights since then and some of them have been very long ones where I got to experience the beauty of the sun setting whilst we were in the sky it is so beautiful and this inspired manystories and great songs in the album,” the ‘Amaona Kuchedwa’ hit maker narrates.

Furthermore, Lawi said the album also addresses social ills and injustices within communities.

He explains, “Sunset in the sky will get you to reflect on life as individuals and comfort you where you are disappointed, heart broken
or down. It will tell you stories, narratives that you relate to. It will make you cry and make you feel that it is okay to express yourself as required in the moment.

“It will also make you happy, It will excite you and take you through the journey of life where you experience endless beauty. Sunset in the sky will refresh and inspire you making you believe you can achieve great levels of success because it is all possible.”
