Lawyer Kalua defeats Kapenuka for SRFL hot seat

Lawyer Trouble Kalua is the new chairperson of one of the country’s oldest league, the Southern Region Football League (SRFL) after seeing off the challenge of former chairman Hastings Kapenuka and new comer Tawina Chalawe during the Annual General Meeting in Zomba.

After weeks of campaigning and making promises, it was time for the affiliates of the league to choose their leaders for the next three years and the chairman’s post generated much anxiety and the shocker came when Kalua beat Kapenuka.

Kalua got 63 votes against Kapenuka’s 24 while Chalawe got 4.

There was jubilation and cheering in the hall as Kalua was mentioned winner while the Kapenuka camp could not believe their eyes as he failed to retain the hot seat.

Kalua: New SRFL chairman

Kalua was excited after the victory but says it’s now time to deliver on the promises he made during the campaign period.

“I am obviously excited with the victory and the faith that people have shown in my abilities. It’s now time to work hard with my new committee to uplift the standards of the league,” he said.

He promises to build a vibrant, transparent and accountable league that seeks to promote football from the roots while ensuring short and long term sponsorship of the league, reducing club affiliation fees to affordable levels among other things.

The new chairman played tribute to Kapenuka saying he had done his part over the years.

“He has worked hard in his tenure of office and it’s now time for fresh ideas to take over and keep the league moving forward,” Kalua added.

Kapenuka congratulated Kalua and asked the new committee to continue the good work he started and atlatl get a new sponsor for the league after Array Plastics pulled out.

Obingtone Kaunda went unopposed as vice chairperson while George Mpagaja retained his post as General Secretary after seeing off Henry Chilinda and Occur Mumba.

Kingsley Simbeye convincingly beat Drackson Malola 84 votes against 7 to become the new vive general secretary.

Stanley Funsani retains his position as treasure with Wezzie Khonje as his deputy.

Committee members are; Mwai Joseni, Alinafe Nifitala, Ignazio Mtambalika and Pasco Nkuta.
