Legal Aid Bureau on sensitization campaign

The Malawi Legal Aid Bureau plans to open offices in all the districts to reach out to Malawians from all walks of life.

Justice for all: Legal Aid services free

This was revealed by the bureau’s Senior Legal Aid Advocate,  Tiwonge  Penama on Thursday during a community sensitization meeting that took place at Kunenekude in Senior Chief Kanduku’s area in Mwanza during a sensitization meeting aimed at informing the general public about services which are offered by the bureau.

“Malawi Legal Aid realized that a lot of people were not aware of the free services offered by the bureau. As such a lot of Malawians have been suffering without knowing that they can get legal assistance from the bureau free of charge.

“To make ourselves easily accessible to the general public we have opened offices in Zomba, Lilongwe and Mzuzu but plans are underway to open offices in all the districts,” said Penama.

He said the bureau targets low income communities as these are the people who face challenges on hiring lawyers who most of the times are very expensive, thereby fail to get the justice they deserve.

In an interview Justice Sauti from Kunenekude hailed the bureau for the awareness saying that it was timely and important as communities now know the operations of the bureau.

“Now we know where to get justice in case of violation of our rights,” said Sauti.

The Legal Aid bureau was established by government under section 3 of the Legal Aid Act of 2011 in order to provide free legal services to less privileged Malawians.

The awareness campaign which is conducted alongside legal aid clinics is supported by Chilungamo Justice and Accountability Programme.
