Lester Tandwe on Sunday emerged winner of the inaugural Ex-Captains golf competition, an initiative by past captains of Blantyre Sports Club aimed at raising money for the maintenance of the golf course.
Played on medal format, Tandwe, handicap 15 beat a pool of 41 golfers amassing 79 gross strokes and a net score of 64. Veteran golfer Charles Nseula playing off handicap 14 came second with a net score of 69 pitting Dr.Guariano, 15 handicap on position three with a net score of 70.
Speaking during the presentation ceremony as ecstatic Tandwe said he has won numerous prizes in the past but Sunday’s trophy was his best because it was an initiative aimed at raising funds for the club without looking from external support.
“Today’s trophy is my best because it will always remind me that if we as golfers can come and pool our resources together without relying on external support, we can manage to improve golf standards in Malawi.
“We should aim to start from within before we go out to hunt for support elsewhere. This is the game we love and let us all work towards improving it,” said Tandwe.
One of the organizers of the tournament, another veteran golfer and himself a past captain of Blantyre Sports Club Donbell Mandala said the Club’s ex-captains decided to organize a fundraising tournament in order to raise money which would go towards improving the golf course.
“We want to make Blantyre Sport Club one of the best golf courses in the country. As the organizing team, we are impressed by the response that we have received both from ex-captains and golfers in general. We have managed to raise over K900 000 as gross. This is no mean achievement,” said Mandala.
Different golfers donated numerous prizes ranging from cooler box, golf balls to motor vehicle engine oil.
