Lightening kills eight SDA church members in Malawi, several others injured

Eight members of Seventh Day Adventist in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe have perished after being struck by lightning following heavy rains that soaked the better part of the city.

The incident occurred at Area 36 on Saturday afternoon as the Adventists were busy worshipping.

Several other church members have been admitted to Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH) while others with minor injuries were treated as outpatients.

Eye witnesses told Nyasa Times the incident occurred while prayers were in progress.

“People were inside the church attending the service when the lightning struck. I first heard a loud burst which frightened almost everybody and few minutes later I just saw a stampede here,” explained an eye witnesses.

At the hospital, a nurse also confirmed having seen eight bodies of dead people being ferried with several others being rushed for treatment.

National Police Spokesperson confirmed about the development but said she was yet to get finer details of the escapade.

Details of the casualties were still not available at the time of posting the article.

“I’m very saddened by this tragic news of my fellow Adventists considering that this was also the last Sabbath of the year in which they took their time to worship the creator on the day He set apart, sanctified and blessed. What a sad way to depart,” mourned one member of Soche Seventh Day Adventist in Blantyre.
