Lilongwe City Council suspend Director of Finance over streets blackout
Lilongwe City Council has suspended Director of finance Jeremiah Sibande over prolonged blackouts which occurred within Capital City streets following ESCOM action of disconnecting power over non payment of bills.
Sibande confirmed to Nyasa Times that he has been suspended.
“Yes I have indeed been suspended but ask Tamara Chafunya (PRO) for more details,” said Sibande.
Chafunya said she was in transit to Blantyre and could not immediately comment when Nyasa Times called her on Friday.
However, sources said apart from Sibande, the council has also suspended Director of Engineering, a Mr Tsogolani.
According to the sources, the council suspended Tsogolani for illegal connection of streets lights.
According to our sources ESCOM queried that some streets had lights despite disconnections.
Human Resource Chairperson in the council Councillor Dr Desmond Bikoko said his committee is monitoring all issues regarding suspension of Sibande and Tsogolani.
“We can not speak at the moment since investigations to establish what happened are still underway,” said Bikoko.
Also investigate Sibande on his influence leading to acquiring of two plots in Area 47 Sector 5, two plots in Area 47 sector 1, two plots in Area 49, one plot in area 43, one plot in area 12 among others.

With this disconnection of street lights traffic police have disappeared in places where they usually position themselves to catch motorists who disregard traffic lights signs and yet this is the time they are needed most especially during he rush hour. Lex ten Kachama this is unprofessional by your men and his just shows that they are there to cash on motorists and not assist them. The sad thing is the fines go into their personal pockets and not Government coffers.

It’s surprising to note that MCP councillors r causing alot of trouble yet MCP HQ building defaulted payment of city rates in millions! They were not even in financial problems not to pay because their money was just robbed frm many Malawians in forced sales of MCP/Kamuzu cards often more than one to the same individual. Infact if they don’t pay we shuld claim our shares frm MCP assets and invest the recovered money in youth technical trainning for free. Their parents had already paid under threat, some even wth their blood
Bikoko is lying. You have to speak because you can’t suspend someone without reasons.
