Lilongwe District Council councillors have protested against the recent defection of opposition Malawi Congress Party (MCP) councillors to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) by walking out of council meeting.
Two councillors from Lilongwe Msozi south recently defected to the DPP amid revelations that the ruling party used money to lure them into defection.
Local Government Association Chairman Samson Chaziya condemned the defections.
“Councillors need to respect parties that sponsored them into the council. They need to respect the people that voted them into. Power through their respective political parties,” said Chaziya who is a de facto chairman of all councillors in Malawi.
Political scientist at Chancellor College Joseph Chunga said there is need for law that should bar councillors from being political prostitutes.
Members of parliament are barred from jumping from one political ship to another through Section 65 of the Republican Constitution.Follow and Subscribe Nyasa TV :
