Lilongwe Water Board in unjustifiable water tariff hike
Some water consumers in Lilongwe have angrily reacted to unjustifiable and unrealistic water tariff hikes for January and February whose water bills have gone up to K100 000 a month.
The water consumers wondered how they could pay K100 000 for water bills when monthly salary for most people in the Capital City is way below the water bills.
“I get K40, 000 a month, you don’t expect me to pay such a huge bill,” said Samson Banda who lives in the city.
A lady, who asked not to be named for fear of reprisals said she was in a shock after getting the water bill.
However, Maurice Kawihe, Lilongwe Water Board assistant public relations officer said the water bills were just human error and said the board is correcting the mistake.
“No one has paid those bills,” said Kawihe.
He described the mistake as an operational error which has since been rectified after the issue was brought to the attention of the water board.

Mr. Kawihe, be serious! You cannot say no one has paid those bills when in fact in January we paid the overcharged bills. I am one of the victims. You have only corrected the February bills.
These guys are a joke, their meter readers inflate figures deliberate especially this language called an estimate when they don’t find people at houses, a lot of people are getting meter readings which are not actual, they are using electronic devices to get meter readings but also i understand that they are not online as they usually say, good people if you don’t have someone at home to be accompanying these meter readings when they are taking data otherwise tidzingolirabe , akalembera ifenso tidzilemba the figure which is on the meter and compare, i have had these scenarios three times… Read more »
Mr Nkawihe, some of us complained in January,2018 on the unjustifiable tariffs and your Office brushed us off and we paid.. My bill went up to MK170,000 from an average of MK45,000.00 per month. Don’t peddle lies.
