Low tobacco volumes halt Mzuzu Auction Floors opening

Tobacco Control Commission (TCC) has shifted the opening of tobacco market in Mzuzu to a later date due to low volumes of the leaf.

Mzuzu tobacco auction floors opening postponed

TCC regional manager for the north Paul Mwawange attributed the low volumes of the tobacco at Mzuzu Auction Floors to harsh weather conditions.

It has been raining for the past weeks in the north making the drying of tobacco very difficult. Mzuzu Auction Floors manager Joseph Kawinga said only 1900 bales of tobacco had arrived at the auction floors by Tuesday.

He said 1900 bales of tobacco were just too little to sustain the tobacco market even for a week.

The main tobacco market, Kanengo Auction Floors opened last week with a call from President Peter Mutharika for improved prices of the leaf.

Limbe and Chinkhoma auction floors have also opened.

Tobacco remains the main stay of Malawi’s economy.
