Malamia wins Euro 2012 Poland trip in Carlsberg promotion

A renowned Blantyre based pool sponsor and player Davie Malamia was lost of words when news was broke to him that he is among the five lucky Malawians to watch live the UEFA Euro 2012 semi finals in the Polish capital, Warsaw, courtesy of Carlsberg Malawi Limited.

The 41-year-old Zingwangwa Township resident joins two other winners, Kondwani Kumwenda and Aubrey Dothi, in the ongoing Carlsberg Euro promotion all-paid-up-trip to Europe’s biggest football tournament.

An employee of the Blantyre City Council (BCC) and business person, Malamia told Nyasa Timesat first he could not believe the news when he was called saying he thought it was one of the phony callers playing games with him.

“I was just driving out of the Blue Diamond when the first call came. I did not take it seriously. But after receiving the second call and realized that it was Code [Sangala- the former Big Brother Africa 5 and All Stars housemate] whom I have never heard of being associated with fraud informing me about the news, I then believed it. Anyway, I am extremely delighted to be one of the winners,” said the excited Malamia, who ironically also supports Liverpool FC, an English Premier League club sponsored by Carlsberg for many years.

He said: “Liverpool has been my team just as Carlsberg is my beer. But I also enjoy playing pool that’s why for many years I have been sponsoring a pool team in Chilobwe Township [Blantyre] and now I am an individual pool competition sponsors.”

Malamia, who also owns a building contractor, said he had sent two entries which will make him step on the Polish soil.

“I enjoy Carlsberg beer and on this particular day, I sent only two entries, and frankly speaking I never expected I would be the lucky one considering that during the previous weeks I did send several entries,” Malamia told Nyasa Times Wednesday evening at Blue Diamond Club.

Commonly known as Avide in the pool circles, particularly at Blue Diamonds Club pool arena where he is a regular, he bets that Spain, which he supports, will be victorious, though he sees some stiff opposition from Netherlands and Portugal.

For one to win in the Carlsberg Euro promotion all-paid-up-trip, he or she is required to send an SMS of a unique code found on the voucher received upon purchasing of any Carlsberg beer and there are two more draws remaining to find the last two winners.

Carlsberg is the official sponsor of UEFA EURO 2012 and Malamia together with his four travelling friends have a chance to meet some world class football player both active and retired, whom they have only been dreaming of meeting live, such as Portugal’s Ronaldo, Argentine Lionel Messi and Peter Schmeichel, the legendary Manchester United and Denmark goalkeeper who was recently appointed global ambassador for Carlsberg.

In world club football, Carlsberg has had a wide ranging partnership throughout Europe and beyond including a long running association with Liverpool FC, a recently announced deal with Arsenal plus Tottenham Hotspur (England), FC Copenhagen, OB-Odense (Denmark), Hamburger SV, Hertha Berlin, FC St. Pauli (Germany), FC Porto (Portugal) and many more.

In Malawi, Carlsberg also introduced and sponsored the Carlsberg Trophy, which used to be the most prestigious and expensive football trophy, for some years before pulling out its sponsorship.
