Malawi accidents: One killed in Lilongwe , another person dies in Mulanje

One person has died at Kamuzu Central Hospital Bridge in Lilongwe after a car he was travelling in crashed into the bridge’s side metal bars and fell off the bridge.

The deceased has been identified as Philemon Munthali who, until his death, was working with the Civil Aviation Department at the Kamuzu International Airport.

According to eye witnesses, the accident happened Sunday night around 9 pm when Munthali lost control of the car.

“I was driving from Mchesi when the vehicle overtook two vehicles, mine and another one which was being driven by some Indian Nationals.  The driver seemingly must have lost control of the vehicle as it was swaying from left to right a couple of times after overtaking us.

“By the time I was approaching the bridge just a few moments later, the vehicle hit a tree just beside the bridge, swayed to the bridges’ side metal bars and had fallen over. There was no any other vehicle coming in the opposite direction at that.” said one eye witness, Kelvin Nsengwa.

Reports indicate the driver was thrown out of the Toyota Camry, Registration Number MJ 4523, as it rolled down the bridge before hitting the ground some 10 meters away.

“Immediately after it fell, we rushed to the scene to see how we could help only to discover the driver was not inside the vehicle. We then started searching around and found the driver who laid still a couple of metres away from the vehicle” said another witness, Issah James.

According to James, police officers rushed to the scene and took the victim to Kamuzu central Hospital.

Lilongwe Police Deputy Spokesperson,    Sub Inspector Kingsley Dandaula, confirmed of the accident and the loss of life.

“Travelling from Kawale towards the Kamuzu Central round about along the Mzimba Street, the victim lost control of the vehicle upon reaching the bridge and hit the metal bars. He died on the spot after sustaining serious head injuries due to the impact,” said Dandaula.

Another accident

A Nissan Truck carrying a load of sand crushed  a 25 year old man to death who tried to jump over from the moving vehicle after noticing some jerks at Nkando Trading Centre.

Bwanali said the victim was eventually run over on the abdomen by the rear tear. Due to the impact, the victim sustained multi-internal injuries and died on the spot.

The driver of the lorry with registration number TO 2293, Mcfedson Zuze ,28, of Nkanthawire Village, Senior Traditional Authority Nanseta in Thyolo district was heading towards Limbe from Mulanje.

In view of the sad development, the Southern Region Police Headquarters is appealing to the general public to shun away from boarding overloaded, un roadworthy automobiles and also to avoid jumping out of vehicles whilst in motion when they sense something has gone amiss with the moving vehicles

The deceased hailed from Nanseta Village, Traditional Authority Chimaliro in Thyolo district.

Meanwhile, Government has expressed concern over the increased cases of road accidents in the country. In a press release issued Sunday, Government has asked motorists to drive carefully to prevent road carnages.
