Malawi albinos call for divine intervention on increasing abductions, killings
People with albinism on Sunday gathered in Kasungu to commemorate the life of two year old girl killed last month because of her albinism status.
Led by Boniface Massa, chairman of the Association of People Living with Albinism, the light skinned people held prayers and sang hymns at Chaziya Village in Chief Kapelera Village as they seek divine intervention following the sharp increase of the abductions and killings of people with albinism.
Witney Chilumpha was abducted from whilst asleep in late night a month ago and only her clothes, a napkin she wore on the particular day, teeth and skull were discovered in a forest two weeks ago by some women fetching firewood.
Deputy police publicist in Kasungu said late Witney’s father and his accomplice have been arrested in connection with the murder.
The people with albinism asked for divine intervention as the police are failing to curb the vice.
“The murder of this innocent child is part of a deeply disturbing pattern of disappearances and killings of people with albinism in Malawi, where body parts are sold for use in witchcraft,” said Muleya Mwananyanda, Amnesty International’s deputy director for southern Africa.
