Malawi govt suspends 4 health workers for negligence
Blantyre Health office has suspended four health workers for negligence after they closed health facilities because of, among other reasons, attending workshops.
The suspension of the four health workers follows the closure of Zingwanga Health Centre and Pensulo Rural Hospital.
District Health Officer Medson Matchaya flanked by other district health officials learned with shock that Pensulo Health Centre was closed on Thursday because some staff went to a workshop and the remaining member of staff was reportedly sick.
At Zingwangwa Health Centre, Matchaya looked furious when he learnt that a woman gave birth at the gate of the facility because a nurse on duty was not available.
The district health officer Medson Matchaya condemned the reckless closure of hospitals without authority from his office.
He commended local health committees for alerting his office and announced the suspension of the four health workers, the in-charge at Zingwangwa Health Centre and four health workers at Pensulo Health Centre.
“We will not condone this type of behaviour and the government shall always take serious action against this,” said Matchaya who was also accompanied by the district commissioner and other political and local leaders who visited the health facilities.
He said the issue would also be referred to relevant health organisations.

As for me I second your Decision Bwana DHO. Firstly, people need to be organised. There is an In-charge who should ensure that there is a proper duty roster and before releasing others for workshops or meetings, She/He must make sure that the chipatala coverage is there. Workshops are not a must attend kind of a thing hence I agree they needed to be suspended more especially the In-charge. Matchaya kumeneko sikuvuta. Please pay a visit to Soche Health Clinic as well. There a clinician who is always telling patients to only report to the Health Centre only akakomoka hawi zonse amati akudwala and there are children who have died due to this kind of Negligence. Ngati sakufuna nchito akapume. Asanzike ndithu.
A number of issues need to be clarified in this story otherwise Mr Matchaya was overtaken by events. From my own understanding of the story,it seems Mr Matchaya,the DHO’s decission can be. challenged in the Court of law unless the workshop in question was self organised by the individuals suspended. Later on we will hear that these people are paid millions of Kwacha from tax payers because of blander by one person in the name of. Matchaya. From the look of things,it seems the problem is not the workshop but shortage og staff at those facilities.If I were Matchaya I would reverse the decision and institute an investigation on why there was no staff remained after others have to workshop which I hope was equally important to the facility..The other problem is that there are people who attend workshops as if they were employed to attend workshop while others remain at facility dejected…Do you expect such people can work? NO!!!! The only option is to fake illiness.These things are happening in many departments especially Minitry Health..
The problem with the health system and delivery is negative repporting.to me this story doenst add up.who organised the workshops and where is the negligence here thought anali ku mowa.mr mathaya who authorised the training mpake ku nsanje anakuthamangitsani.y go with politician while on govt duty?
Those people have to be sacked as well as to be sued to the court of law!

If the woman gave birth at the gate thats not hospital delivery, its BBA. So u wanted the nurse / midwife to conduct a delivery at the gate? Even if it was I cudnt do that. M’mene msana umawawilamo delivery ya pansi. The same nurse kut apange zabwino u can’t appreciate.

Ba Matchaya its high time you gave it a big thought to go to school for specialisation. You can not remain a DHO for ever. Your colleagues you started along together with in that position went back to school and are now specialists. Leave that position to newly qualified doctors. Plz move on. Do not be trapped wth unlasting incentives which that position brings
Did they invite themselves to the workshop? Were the workshops beneficial to them alone not the whole health system? Matchaya need some schooling
