Malawi army dismisses ‘jealousy’ soldier for shooting himself, lover

Reports  from Malawi Defence Force (MDF) headquarters at Kamuzu Barracks, Lilongwe indicate that ilitary officer accused of shooting his former girlfriend, also a soldier, before turning the gun on himself has been sacked and will be prosecuted as a civilian, Nyasa Times understands.

Army spokesman Lieutenant Paul Chiphwanya has confirmed the development.

Gomezgani Gondwe is said to have shot Lyasha Chipeta after “irreconcilable differences” made the woman to end the affair.

Gondwe is believed to have been angered by Chipeta when she told him that she was no longer interested in their love relationship. Gondwe got angry and shot his girl friend first and later shot himself.

Lyasha Chipeta: Shot

Chipeta’s sister, Chisomo Chidaya, said a bullet ripped through Chipeta’s back before coming out through her upper breast area.

The soldiers are from Kamuzu Barracks in Lilongwe.

Both soldiers were taken to Kamuzu Central hospital where they have been receiving treatment.

Meanwhile, Nyasa Times military sources confided that Gondwe has indeed since been dismissed and would likely face attempted murder charges in a civilian court.

“CPI Gomezgani Gondwe who shot his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself has been dismissed from MDF with effect from today and has been handed over to Civil Police where he will be prosecuted by the court of law,” confided the source.

It still remains to be explained as to why MDF handed over its own officer to the police despite the fact that it has functioning legal system where ill-disciplined soldiers are tried under the martial law.
