Malawi beat South Sudan 2-1 to open Afcon qualifying campaign

Malawi began their TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign with a 2-1 win over South Sudan at Bingu National Stadium on Friday night.

Babatunde Adepoju gave the Flames an early lead in the 19th minute, but South Sudan levelled almost immediately after the restart, capitalising on a mix-up in the Malawi defence to equalise in the 46th minute.

Lloyd Njaliwa restored Malawi’s advantage in the 65th minute, and although both sides created further chances as the game opened up, neither could add to the scoreline.

Malawi coach Kalisto Pasuwa made several changes as the match progressed, bringing on Wisdom Mpinganjira, Francisco Madinga and Ephraim Kondowe for Chifundo Mphasi, Patrick Mwaungulu and goalscorer Adepoju, adding fresh energy going forward.

Late substitutions saw Yankho Singo and Adel Kaduya replace Gaddie Chirwa and Blessings Singini as Malawi shored up their defensive shape to see out the win.

The result gives Malawi maximum points from their opening qualifier. They will next travel to Angola for an away fixture in ten days’ time.
