Malawi Blood Transfusion Services sounds  SOS, lacks ‘O’ type

Blood bank, the Malawi Blood Transfusion Services (MBTS) has sounded, saying it is lacking the crucial ‘O’ negative type, a universal blood donor.

Spokesperson for MBTS Allen Kaombe said the ‘O’ negative is an important blood because it can be given out to any type of a person with different blood types.

“This is a rare type of blood, we need urgently,” said Kaombe urging people with the type of blood and other types of blood to go to hospitals and make the blood donations.

He said the blood bank is getting dry because last year, out targeted 120, 000 units of blood, MBTS only collected 63, 000 units which he said translates to 10,000 units a month for the whole country.

He said the 63, 000 units is just 52 per cent of the blood collected, saying the MBTS collected just over 50 per cent of the ‘O’ level type of blood.

“This type of blood is rare, they are universal donors, they supply blood to people of any type of blood, we need this type of blood in our blood banks,” he said.

MBTS collects much blood especially during school summer holidays when students go and donate blood in various temporary centres mounted by the MBTS.

MBTS must sort out its nepotism first…every head of department & deputy are from the north (you can verify it) not coz they are better but systematic corruption that starts at recruitment of staff. The treatment they give for employees from other regions is bad. That has a negative bearing on those employees who are sent to collect blood and do sensitization. They must also be innovative by bringing new approaches to blood collection and civic education, if you can analyse their blood collection system, they are still using the same approaches they started using around 2002 when MBTS was… Read more »

There are using neoliberalist approach to collect bloods of people. Yo donate free but when you get sick you are asked to buy. What a stupid capitalism.

MBTS lacks customer care service, I am a regular blood donor and O negative is my blood group, The kind of reception that i got last time i went to donate was very poor. I have donated more than 10 times. You get treated as if you are begging for something from them. No follow ups whatsoever for regular donors. I gave up. They need to improve on customer care.

Join the discussion…many many countries pay cash up front to donors, this is seen by many as a type of income, they don’t allow to give blood within a certain short time period which means the person donating the blood does not get problems themselves , but yes I myself regularly sell my blood in Saudi Arabia, we are then given tea and biscuits free of charge and thanked for the donation. I then by a nice present to take back home. everyone is happy
