Opening the training workshop in Mangochi, recently, Episcopal Conference of Malawi’s National Pastoral Secretary, Fr. Regis Ted Kamela said young people in the Church form an important sector that needs to be fully equipped with necessary leadership skills and knowledge.

Fr. Kameela said among other objectives; the youth workshop was meant to provide young leaders with skills in coordinating youth activities; communication skills as well as update their knowledge on existing ecclesiastical structures. Other skills imparted during the training were on strategic leadership and resource mobilisation, Fr. Kamela said.

Blantyre Archdiocesan Youth Chaplain, Fr. Frank Mwinganyama spoke about the functions of the hierarchy in the Catholic Church and how information within the Church is processed.

“It is the duty of the Catholic youth to understand that the Catholic Church is a universal Church so that they can understand the (structure of the) liturgy in the Church,” Fr. Mwinganyama said.

Vice Chairperson of NMCS, Violet Thooko Machika described the training as timely and an eye-opener saying this would boost their leadership skills not only for their benefit but also for the good of the Church and the nation as a whole.

“We would like to thank the Episcopal Conference of Malawi for its concern towards the youth. Indeed we are the future leaders, and with this training, most definitely we are going to take over Church leadership,” said Machika, a student at the Catholic University of Malawi.

The training involved at least sixty young persons drawn mostly from Malawi’s tertiary institutions.
