Malawi Chief Immigration Officer Thodi fired

Chief Immigration Officer Elvis Thodi has been fired, Office of the President and Cabinet has confirmed.

His contract was ending in August 2012 but government says it will not be renewed.

Thodi has been fired  a day after a meeting between President Joyce Banda and Immigration officers at the New State House on Sunday.

The meeting which was believed to be emergency saw some officers accusing Thodi of abuse of offices.

“There was drama at the meeting. The meeting was called by the President. She spoke, the chief secretary also spoke and then the chief immigration officer took his turn.

“The President said she had received reports of passports being given to illegal immigrants like Burundians and protection of some foreigners who are not supposed to be in the country,” the president is quoted to have said.

The junior officers were led by the interdicted officer Andrew Chifukwa who roasted Thodi in the presence of the president.

President Banda sided with the juniors and directed that all interdictions be lifted.

Chifukwa confirmed attending the meeting and that his interdiction was lifted.
