Malawi security lapse: Robbers snatch K3.8m outside FDH bank

There was drama Monday morning along the Victoria Avenue Street in the city of Blantyre when three men, armed to teeth, snatched a bag containing money amounting to K3.8 million belonging to owner of Sachas bakery who was just a yard away from entering the doors of FDH bank.

The robbers, according to eyewitness who spoke to Nyasa Times, were smartly dressed to the extent that no one suspected they were carrying any dangerous weapons until they moved in on the business man who was on his way to deposit the money at the bank.

Meanwhile the Asian businessman was reportedly hopeless as he saw the robbers getting away with his money.

“It all happened so fast I just saw the man shouting after the robbers had already sped away using a brand new Toyota Camry

“It was horrific situation because the two carried Pangas while the third one was armed with a gun,” an eye witness who sell airtime outside the bank told Nyasa Times.

Police investigation underway

Blantyre police spokesperson Lameck Thembachako said investigations were underway on the incident.

However, other well placed sources in the police service confided to us that a manhunt, currently underway within the city, nearly yielded results when they missed by a whisker an opportunity to apprehend some suspected men at the Chichiri shopping more in connection to the robbery.

Malawians have for the past few weeks witnessed horrible incidents of murder and armed robberies.

This has left many Malawians feeling insecure.

According to various comments monitored on local radio stations through various phone in programs President Mrs. Joyce Banda has been urged to swiftly intervene as things are seemingly out of hand.
