Malawi coach inspired by Zambia’s exploits

Flames coach Kinnah Phiri says Zambia’s exploits at the on going African Cup on Nations is a motivation to him that with proper planning and support, Malawi can reach Zambia’s heights.

Zambia’s Chipolopolo boys reached the final of the tournament with a shock 1 – 0 victory over pre tournament favourites Ghana.

Emmanuel Mayuka scored the lone goal that booked them a date with Ivory Coast in Sunday’s final.

Kinnah: We can emulate Chipolopolo

Kinnah, who is in camp with his team ahead of the Afcon 2013 qualifier game against Chad later this month, says Zambia have been on a serious mission from the start of the campaign and have made Southern Africa proud.

“They have done us proud. Its not a very different type of football from other southern African countries but they are determined, quick and hard working,” he told Nyasa Times.

He said beating the so called “big team” like Ghana in the semi’s underlines how strong their team is and can surprise many by winning it.

Asked if Malawi can emulate Zambia’s feat, the flames mentor was upbeat saying everything is possible in football.

“We can do it! If we have the right resources, good preparation, support from both government and the private sector,we have what it takes to do great,” Kinnah said without elaborating.

Malawi would have been at this year’s showpiece in Equatorial Guinea and Gabon but lost it in the last minutes of their game against Chad in Ndjamena to give a chance to Tunisia.

Malawi is now banking on Afcon 2013 which will take place in South Africa.
