A Police officer in Malawi’s northern city of Mzuzu on Tuesday shocked his fellow law enforcers when he shot himself minutes after reporting for duty.
The officer, identified as Sergeant Evance Ngosi shot himself around 7am in the presence of his boss Darlington Akambadi.
Ngosi is said to have been complaining of financial problems for the past weeks and he told the some people at the office that he would commit suicide.
And on the material day, Ngosi went to his office where he asked for gun, claiming he was on private duty despite not being on the roster for such an assignment.
He was given an FN rifle and went to Mzuzu Community Policing office and closed the door.
While in the office, Ngosi pulled the trigger and the bullet hit him around the hip.
He is said to have a huge debt that he is failing to settle, hence the decision to take his life.
Northern Region Police spokesperson Norah Chimwala said they are investigating the matter.
Ngosi is currently at Mzuzu Central Hospital for medical attention, according to Chimwala.
