Malawi court fines man K350, 000 for killing five people in a car accident

Thyolo Second Grade Magistrate, Lameck Mkwapatira has fined 35-year-old Peter Khanawe K350, 000 or spend 3years in jail for causing an accident that killed five people in January this year.

Mkwapatira said the sentence should serve as a deterrent to drivers of Escom where the convicted is working and other service providers who over speed, a situation which he said put many lives at risk.

Thyolo Police Publicist, Edith Likaka also confirmed the development , saying Khanawe has not yet paid the fine and was being kept at Thyolo Prison.justice

Khanawe who works for Escom was arrested after the pickup which carried Escom workers overturned due to over speeding and killed two workers on the spot while other three died at Thyolo District Hospital as they were receiving treatment.

The vehicle had 19 workers on board many of whom sustained minor injuries.

Peter Khanawe hails from Ngamwani Village, T/A Kapichi in Thyolo.
