Malawi CPI inflation quickens to 9.8 pct y/y

Malawi’s headline consumer inflation rate quickened to 9.8 percent year-on-year in December from 8.9 percent in November, the National Statistics Office (NSO) said in a statement.

The NSO said the annual average inflation rate for 2011 was up at 7.6 percent from 7.4 percent in 2010.

Economic plunge worsens cost of living

The Roman Catholic body called Centre for Social Concern (CFSC), said December, 2011 food prices increased most due to the hiking of maize price by government from K2,000 to K3,000.

Overall, consumer price index (CPI) inflation rose with costs of goods reaching almost record levels.
