Malawi to face epileptic electricity supply during Easter – ESCOM

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) says Malawians should expect more load shedding during the Easter Holiday due to the reduction in electricity supply by the Electricity Generation Company (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO).

EGENCO is expected to carry out planned maintenance works at Nkula and Kapichira Power Stations from Thursday, April 13, 2017 to Monday, April 17, 2017.

“Nkula A Power Station will be taken out of service from 10 pm on Thursday April 13, 2017 to Saturday, April 15, 2017 for the planned maintenance works. This will result in a total of 124 Megawatts not being made available to ESCOM during the state period thereby necessitating further load shedding,” reads a statement issued by the utility service provider.

Moreover, ESCOM stipulates that Kapichira Unit 1 will be taken out of the system for maintenance works from 10 pm on Saturday, April 15, 2017 to 5 pm on Monday, April 17, 2017 resulting in a total of 32 Megawatts not being available to ESCOM during the stated period.

Meanwhile, ESCOM is encouraging all customers to use electricity sparingly and observe energy saving tips in view of the impact of the reduction in the available electricity.

ESCOM is expected to make available details of the electricity load management programme in print media and on its website by Wednesday, April 12, 2017.
