As Malawians continue to explore more ways of pushing the country’s music industry, a team of Blantyre-based young entrepreneurs has revealed the introduction a new music awards show.

One of the founders, Chifundo Maganga, well-known as Googz, confirmed Malawian artists and music fans should be looking forward to Nyasa Music Awards starting next year.

He confirmed on Tuesday: “It will be an awards show hosted every year. We’ve noticed that we don’t recognize artists in Malawi”.

Currently, Malawi has a single active awards show that recognizes the country’s music talent, the UMP Awards, which takes place in Blantyre.

The other awards show, Muma Awards, run by the Musicians Union of Malawi, was last held in 2015. These were introduced following the death of the Malawian Music Awards (MMAs), only held in 2011.

Muma Awards and the MMAs were the first two awards shows to start recognizing urban musicians, which the Entertainers of the Year, an awards event that celebrated talents from different fields, never did.

Googz, who runs a number of businesses in Blantyre, including Options clothing stores, observed that Malawi needs more than one awards ceremony.

“Other countries have over five awards shows [and] this [Nyasa Music Awards] will encourage Malawian artists put in more work,” he explained.

“It’s going to be a red carpet event hosted at an executive place, strictly formal dressing. We just want to do it differently.

“We have about 15 categories from video of the year, album of the year, best gospel artist etc. We are planning on doing a lot of promo shows before the main event,” he disclosed further.

Besides Googz, other partners are Mathambo Lowole, Kennedy ‘Ken Gunz’ Chitedze and James Makunje.
