Malawi girl caught smuggling cocaine at KIA
Police at Malawi’s main Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) have arrested a 23-year-old woman coming from India was on Wednesday after she was picked out for screening and found with cocaine.
According to spokesperson Sergeant Peter Botha, the KIA police spokesman , the woman Annie Maria Masangano of Ntenje village in Traditional Authority Likoswe in Chiradzulu district, had stuffed the cocaine in television screens.
Sergeant Botha said Masangano had flown into KIA from India on Ethiopian Airways via Addis Ababa.
Police has since pressed charges of trafficking cocaine and importation of a controlled substance.
“She will be taken to Lilongwe Magistrate Court on Thursday,” said Botha.
Recently Police at the airport also arrested a South African national who was found with an undisclosed quantity of cocaine.
Botha said they arrested Marvellous Mabule Khumalo, “who was found with cocaine in her bags.”
Khumalo was travelling on a Nairobi-bound Kenyan Airways flight from India. She carried a South African passport.
A recent study showed that because of lack of sophistication in scanning equipment, Malawi is used as a conduit for contraband from South America bound for South Africa, Asia and Eurupe.
