Malawi govt accuses Chilima of peddling ‘petty propaganda’: Denies DPP demanding K10m from parastatals

Government has responded to allegations made by UTM Party presidential torchbearer, Saulos Chilima, that the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has instructed all parastatals to channel K10 million each to its coffers for campaign as mere “fabrications” and unfortunate.

Chilima, 46, one of the hottest contenders to President Peter Mutharika, 79, said on Tuesday that he was aware of “government’s plot” to fund the DPP by directing parastatals to channel 10 million kwacha to the party’s coffers.

In a statement released Wednesday, former Minister of Information and government spokesperson, Henry Mussa, said Chilima had all the rights to cross-check with the sources of DPP’s funding as per provision under the Political Parties Act.

“These pieces of legislation can be used to demand disclosure by a political party of its sources of funding and resources.

“We wish to bring the existence of these legal instruments to the attention of Saulos Chilima to help him establish correct information regarding sources of funding to the DPP,” reads the statement in part.

According to the statement, Chilima’s claims on Tuesday are simply “part of falsehoods coming from the leader of UTM.”

“If truth be told, it is Chilima who is abusing public funds and resources for his campaign. He does not work, but uses public money, Government vehicles and personnel for his campaign.

“The falsehoods being churned out, we reiterate, are simply Chilima’s gimmick to smear Government and whip up the anger of the people of Malawi during these last days of the campaign period,” further reads the statement.

It adds: “In the same vein, the threats against heads of parastatals with unspecified action, in the event that he takes over Government, are a desperate ploy to portray himself as a tough leader and also brainwash his supporters into believing that he will triumph in the 21st May 2019 elections at all costs.”

According to the statement, his outbursts only show that Chilima is aware that winning the presidency is not an easy go otherwise “he would not be sweating blood to campaign and invest heavily to market his candidacy.

“We are disappointed that Chilima is not being transformational in his approach to politics as he promised and instead has resorted to indulging in petty propaganda.”

  20. It’s high time DPP started accepting wrongful doings in order to reform and stand the litmus test of forming a responsible government. Problem of DPP is that they are fast in denying and slow in acknowledging their wrongs. Take for example maizegate, fuelgate, gesetgate, policegate, K 145 million APM-Karimugate and tractorgate. We should now know that whenever there is a scandal in government where DPP does not agree it means YES and where it agrees means it’s Double or triple YES.

    In this case it’s a yes and SKC is very right only that the government spokesperson then was in the process of getting a No Objection that is inn the way coming..
